Love your Body, Move your Body

Posted on Feb 11, 2014 in Dance, Naturally Nancy, Play

This week be sure to take a moment every day to do what you love. Heck, do this every week  for that matter. I dare ya!  Then just notice how much clearer your mind is, and much better you respond to the stressors of everyday life.  Notice how alive and vibrant your body will feel, and how joy-full you become. Why? Because we are designed for movement, but our lifestyle has trained us to be stagnate. Ick!  Today’s invitation is to push back your chair for a minute or three and get your energy moving.  It could look like doing a few squats at your chair (super brain yoga), or a few neck stretches at your desk, or, my personal favorite, what I call a “5 minute dance break.”  Do it in the morning, do it in the evening, do in the afternoon.  Whenever, wherever, you can fit it in to your day to day routine.  Trust me you don’t have time not to.  All research shows we are more focused, effective and efficient after periods of movement…and meditation. The old Japanese proverb says “We are fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance.” and be full of joy, than sit around feeling tired, anxious, stiff or cranky, right? InJOY!

Stillness in the Movement?

Posted on May 28, 2012 in Dance, Naturally Nancy

As a passionately embodied dancer, my preferred path to stillness has always been through movement. However, with a fractured heel bone, the universe has afforded me an amazingly rich opportunity to practice finding movement in the stillness.  What a blessing of a lesson to go from finding stillness only after wringing myself out with big, energetic movements expressed on the dancefloor, to now experience the other side.  read more

How do you make a dancer crazy?

Take away her ability to express herself through movement.  Talk about pushing one towards one’s edge.  I teach movement for a living.  It is my passion.  My vocation.  My expression.  My meditation.  My release.  The voice of my heart and soul expressed through my body.  Wow!  What an interesting and frustrating challenge it is to not be able to move in ways that I am accustomed to.  I cannot move through my emotions physically.  I cannot run from them.  I get to sit with them.  Sit in the discomfort and find ways to make it comfortable.  Discover new ways of being, expressing, creating and releasing that do not involve moving my body.  Or at least that involve moving it in new, previously unexplored ways. read more

More Life for Me Please!

Posted on Apr 8, 2012 in Dance, Naturally Nancy

One night an amazing teacher of mine, Samantha Sweetwater, showed up and offered us this as the ultimate prayer.  “More life for me please!”  Allowing the shame and guilt to come up in offering a prayer that on the surface appears to the unseeing eye as totally selfish.  Going deeper into that prayer, is the realization that self-love, nuturing and prayers for our own individual healing, growth and joy, simply radiate outward rippling out to every other cellular being until eventually returning back to ourselves. Embrace the idea of loving ourselves more deeply, in order to both love others more and receive more love from others.  You can only get what you give, in this case, what you give yourself! read more

Willful or Willing?

Posted on Feb 15, 2012 in Dance, Inspiration, Naturally Nancy

When you do things from your soul,
you feel a river moving in you, a joy.

When actions come from another section,
the feeling disappears.

Don’t let others lead you.  They may be blind,
or worse, vultures.  Reach for the rope
of God.  And what is that? read more

Movement is life

‎”90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine. This would be analogous to a windmill generating electricity.” ~Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize Winner, Brain Research

This is exactly why if clients are stuck, feeling foggy or dull, I have them stand up and dance! And if they aren’t willing to do that, I ask them to do some jumping jacks. It’s true: Shaking your bottom = Waking up your brain! read more
