Having the mind of Christ?

Having the mind of Christ?

There are times I find myself getting caught up in the whirlwind of energy of those around me or the spinning of negative self-talk in my own head.  I would find myself, completely swept up in this current, wondering why I felt lost, looking for my way back home, back to my CENTER.

Now after much opportunity to experience what THAT feels like…I have learned to CHECK IN WITH MYSELF.  “Wow, I am feeling all spun out again.”  I now recognize this feeling and have associated with the string of choices to follow, that are a far cry from what I would call SELF-LOVE.

It can feel like I’m watching myself in a movie.  I hear my inner critic saying “look here I am doing it again,” and then, “dammit, I am STILL doing it!”  Sometimes I continue down the path, diving in completely and noticing how it makes me feel.  Does it truly satisfy me or only make me feel worse?  Without judgment of self, but simply as an observer, I allow myself to learn from the experience.  This practice can allow different decisions to be made next time, from a more clearly informed viewpoint!

Each time the cycle is consciously interrupted, it gets easier make a better choice…and it is never to late to turn around.  Seriously, if you were driving in your car somewhere and suddenly realized you had been going the wrong way for the last 100 miles, would you continue on the same course just because you have already come this far? Absolutely not, it would suck, but you would certainly turn around! However, with our own internal choices we do just that!   “Well, I have already had 2 glasses of wine.  I have screwed up again so I might as well have 2 slices of cheesecake and chocolate bar.”

Stop, “pull over,” and reorient yourself!  Come back to total awareness of the present moment.  You can use a variety of tools in the moment to break the cycle.  By combining them with a daily awareness practice (meditation, Qi Gong, breathwork, time in nature, etc), detours become less disruptive and life becomes much easier to navigate.

I regularly use a quick technique I call “3 grounding breaths,” combining breath with acupressure points to reboot my internal computer software.  Or if I have more time I will do Donna Eden’s 5 minute energy routine.  In addition I ask questions…

How does this feel to me?  Does it make me feel lighter or heavier?  Expanded or contracted?  What are my thoughts like?  What is the mental vision it creates?  What words/phrases/songs come to mind?

Breath space into the thoughts spinning in the mind – link the spacious mind to the heart center.  Breathe spacious out from the center of the torso in all directions.  Then EMBODY that by sensing and connecting how that feels in the physical body.  In that space, amazing things can happen.

“It happens whenever, by some wondrous “coincidence,” our heart space, our mind space, and our body awareness are all simultaneously open and nonresistant. I like to call it presence. It is experienced as a moment of deep inner connection, and it always pulls you, intensely satisfied, into the naked and undefended now, which can involve both profound joy and profound sadness at the very same time.” Rohr refers to this level of awareness as “having the mind of Christ”  ~Richard Rohr
